From bad boy blues to happy tunes at Emmylou Harris’s sanctuary

July 25, 2008 : 4:15 PM ET

Sherry Woodard, Best Friends’ animal behavior expert, is usually on the road, showing shelters and rescues how to handle dogs with behavior issues.

Last week, she was in Nashville, Tennessee, where country music legend Emmylou Harris has a sanctuary for rescued dogs. And one of them, Gunnar, was posing quite a challenge for the staff!

Gunnar was a skittish stray picked up in a neighborhood a year earlier ... and then scheduled to be put down at a local shelter. Instead, he was chosen to go to Bonaparte’s Retreat, Emmylou’s personal rescue center at her house for dogs, and an occasional cat.

Emmylou needed Gunnar to find a permanent home, so that another lucky shelter dog, also pulled from death row, would be able to take his place at Bonaparte’s. But Gunnar was not exactly cooperating.

While Gunnar loves and trusts three people – Emmylou, Kate (Emmylou’s assistant) and the man who rescued him – he lunges and snaps at new people, plus he’s bitten some (although no one has required medical care). It’s all based on fear of the unknown.

“I’ve met so many dogs like Gunnar,” Sherry says. “He’s another dog who needs help, and I’m very proud of Emmy and Kate for trying to help him.”

“He has some pretty big fears,” Sherry reported to us. “Anytime he was feeling threatened by a new person getting close, he would threaten and snap.”

When Sherry first arrived, the 80-pound Gunnar made it known he wanted her to steer clear. So a good part of the first day was spent observing his interactions with Emmylou and Kate and learning his routine. Despite Gunnar’s behavior issues, Sherry says he is a happy dog who enjoys toys, playing with his favorite people, and going for walks and car rides.

“He’s lacking life skills, like any dog who lives on the street,” Sherry says. “To him, people are unpredictable.”

Sherry points out that it took rescuers a while to safely trap Gunnar. After he was caught, he was taken to a vet to be neutered. The vet found that Gunnar was heartworm-positive, and he has since been successfully treated.

The goal for now, Sherry says, is to expand the dog's comfort zone. For Gunnar to be able to go into a permanent home, and free up precious space at Bonaparte’s, he needs the very exposure he’s resistant to. That’s one of the things Sherry worked on with Emmylou and Kate.

“We’re trying to make a bigger world for him,” she says.

By day two, Sherry was able to take Gunnar’s leash and walk him herself. The biggest accomplishment on the last day was a trip to a pet supply store, which included exposure to cats, who, Sherry says, “Gunnar respected.” Also, he rode in the car and showed no threatening behavior toward Sherry – another positive step.

“We tried a different environment,” Sherry says. “That was a big challenge for him, and he did really well. I am thrilled with his progress.”

But it doesn’t end there. Sherry is creating a training plan for Gunnar. “Emmy’s going to be on the road,” she says. “Before she left, she wanted to know that Kate had more tools. We learned a lot about Gunnar, and we have a lot of things to work on to help him.”

At the end of Sherry’s visit to Nashville, Emmylou headed out in her tour bus with two of her dogs and a group of musicians, knowing that Gunnar had made progress.

In the meantime, Sherry is following up with Kate while Emmylou is on the road.

“They’ve done incredibly well," says Sherry, "staying committed to a dog with some pretty big behavioral challenges. As busy as their lives are, they got creative and came up with their own ideas. Until they asked for help from us, they kept trying and trying. Gunnar could eventually go into a home, like so many shelter dogs, with people who can manage his behavior.”

Until then, she says, “I’ll continue helping with his progress.”

I am glad that Emmy does not turn her back to dogs like Gunnar. Dogs with problems are so often euthenized without a second thought. I have a dog similar to Gunnar myself. Apollo (Baby) is a 14 month old Golden Retriever/Pit/Chow mix that I got from Metro Animal Control and has ,from day one , not trusted anyone other than the three of us. We had just picked him up and went to a Petsmart to get some supplies when ,inside the store, some one thought he was cute and tried to pet him and he curled his lip and snarled. He was three months old . Now he can go out places as long as no one pays any attention to him. The moment someone speaks to him or looks at him he starts barking and growling while from behind my legs. No one can come in the house without us having put him upstairs and he went to the vet in a muzzle. Oh , and he does have eccentricities! He is scared of perfume, German language tapes, guitars, and sometimes barks at us until he realizes that we are really us. Whoever abused him made him extremely insecure and mistrustful .But I 'm so glad we got him and that he didn't get put to sleep for being a crazy baby!! He is a 61 pound lap dog full of kisses and affection- but only for us; and that's fine with me! I wish I could have Gunnar since I have experience with fear aggressive dogs. Maybe in the future I'll be able to!

Thank you Emmylou. I am so thankful for your interest and your real help for these who are less fortunate. God did not populate this world with only people. These are his creation too - and they deserve to be loved and cared for. Thank you again Emmylou.

I was the individual who trapped Gunnar last summer using a coyote trap. I have been taking him for walks during the year since Emmy took the dog into her rescue. She spared no expense to make Gunnar happy and comfortable. Emmy and Kate are both compassionate about animal welfare. I am forever thankful to Emmy. Btw, Gunnar just started living with Kate and her dog Bear. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Condolences to Emmylou!!! She just cancelled a show here in Santa Fe, NM for tomorrow - I believe her mother just passed away, whom she was very close to. Prayers and thoughts are with you, Emmylou.

I am so happy to read that Emmylou Harris has a beautiful heart to match her lovely voice. If anyone can help Gunnar get past his fears, it is Sherry. So Gunnar has quite a team on his side!

I'm so happy to hear about your success with dogs with "ISSUES", as my shelter calls dogs with problems. For over a year now I have been involved in trying to make my shelter a no kill shelter and I'm constantly hitting a road block because of numerous reasons, one main one is, Insurance. They won't even talk about "No Kill". Their worried more about being sued than the life that is being put down, at times dogs are even being put down as a precaution instead of allowing them to be adopted. Your sanctuary, Best Friends, Pets Alive and so many other sanctuary shelters are God's greatest gifts to these poor unfortunate animals. Thank you and God Bless you for all you do.

I am so happy to hear that things are working out . My husband and I had an austrailian shepard mixed with chow that looked sooooo much like the dog in the picture on the left , I am thinking that is Gunnar. Orlando was our dogs name and he had the exact same type of attitude. He was a loving dog to all he knew , anyone new he would growl at. I wish we would have been able to find a sanctuary here in AZ that had the room to take him when we lost our home (in foreclosure) due to the market and was not able to keep him. I called every no kill shelter around to no avail. We had to take him to the Humane Society and all I can do is pray that he was able to be adopted. I am so thankful for all that your santuary is doing for the pets are not just animals they are part of a family . Way to go GUNNAR.

Obviously foxfire doesn't know Emmy Lou very well. According to my husband she is the most beautiful person in the world with a voice to match. Thank you so much Emmy Lou for stepping up to the plate and helping these aniamls.

I worked with a dog with behavior issues at a No-kill shelter and was trying to get the time to set up a new place for him with me and a professional trainer. He was a great dog, but needed to get out of a shelter setting and all the chaos. But they wouldn't give us the time. This was his eulogy poem. I lost him a month ago.

My Buster Brown Humans fear what they don't understand and sometimes what they fear they kill But I know your heart and you know mine. I miss you now and always will.

They're all worth the effort, and with folks like Sherry and the Dog Whisperer saying as much, hopefully more can be saved and re-homed.
