What’s life like when you’re retired as a seeing-eye dog? For Cameo, it started a little sad, but now she’s at Best Friends, and it looks like she’s on her way to a real home!
Cameo was living in Ohio, where she was a seeing-eye dog for two blind women in the same house. But as Cameo got older, and the women had a harder time getting on, they realized they weren’t doing a good job taking care of the old girl anymore, and they asked for help.
But at first it seemed like help was nowhere to be found!
So Cameo came to Best Friends. Here, she went into foster care because seeing-eye dogs are used to being with one person all the time. Dogtown wasn’t for her! It was Jessica Cliver who agreed to take the bewildered dog into her home as a foster. She said, “Cameo really needed the constant companionship, and she loves to fetch balls.”
Cameo is 12, and suffers from both arthritis and some neurological issues in her hips. But what luck! You may remember that the new fitness center at Best Friends is now open. So as a Best Friends foster, Cameo was able to call and schedule a twice-weekly appointment for hydrotherapy. (OK, technically her foster mom called.) And after weeks of coming every Wednesday and Friday, the improvement has been remarkable! She’s a really satisfied customer.
What’s more, foster mom Jessica has grown so attached that she said she’s just about ready to sign the adoption papers. What a perfect landing for this highly deserving dog!
