He’s just my size!

January 23, 2006 : 11:52 AM ET

Everybody needs a friend, no matter what their size. When new dogs come to Best Friends we know they need a buddy, but we also know that the best buddies have hearts in common and not always stature!

Check out some of these surprising Dogtown pairs:

At first look it seems Ren, an active Shiba Inu mix, runs the household. Whether he’s playing ball or chatting with the other dogs, Ren is on the move. His roommate is Spice, a small wire-haired terrier who is calm and quiet – until Ren almost runs her over, but she’s not afraid! Spice might be half Ren’s size, but she never lets that stop her from showing him who’s boss.

Another unusual pair living at Best Friends is Gino and Crystal. Gino is a large malamute mix with an adorable howl. Although he is a large dog, Gino is calm and gives big hugs. He lives with Crystal, a small pit-bull mix with bright blue eyes. Crystal is a little shy with new people, but around Gino she lets herself go and becomes a playful pup – and standing next to him she looks like a puppy, too!

Of course, most dogs at Dogtown live in large groups but some dogs like these quirky pairs are more comfortable with just one friend. And while it might seem these goofy duos are unlikely matches, don’t let their appearance fool you. Sometimes even the oddest couples get along great and enjoy the most meaningful friendships.

It's obvious that with a bond this strong, these animals are meant to be together in their future homes. I'm sure there are many subscribers that have the room not only in their homes, but their hearts as well for such good buddies. Separating them would be very unfortunate.

I love this story! My teacher and I were talking and decided if we could ever pull off a rescue center we will! She loves animals too!

(Karen N.): Funny....that was running through my mind the whole time I was reading this too......I'm sure it happens that one is adopted and not the other quite frequently but the thought sure is heart breaking...........

What happens if someone wants to adopt only one of the dogs and not their best friend?
