It was a great one-day event, with thousands of people, dozens of shelters and rescue groups, and a record number of adoptions. Here’s the first batch of photos taken by a volunteer early in the day.
This nice kitty has a somewhat inflated sense of herself, but is always on hand to welcome people to the adoption day.
Our favorite adoption of the day was a sad little 10-year-old Chihuahua mix from a shelter, who seemed to have lost all hope and given up on life. (We didn’t get a photo, so here’s a different Chihuahua also getting adopted!)
Anyway, the other one didn’t even want to walk around and wasn’t interested in showing off for the crowd. So we were planning to bring him back to the sanctuary since his chances of being adopted seemed to be zero.
But at the end of the day he was sitting in the lap of a woman in a wheel-chair who looked happier than a kid at Christmas with a new puppy. Her daughter had brought her to the adoption to see if she could find a low-energy lap dog. It was the perfect match!
Little Angels Pug Rescue wows the crowds with tons of weird pugs and pug mixes!
“Shall we take this one … or that one … or … yes … Both!”
Birds like this one can live to be 70 years old and often outlive their person. And they can get quite depressed when they find themselves without their human “mate.” So this 24-year-old is looking for someone who might keep him for another 50 years!
Los Angeles city and county shelters are always well represented at the Adoption Festival. This time, they brought 122 dogs and cats. And any that weren’t adopted were taken in by rescue groups to insure that they all get good homes.
Lots of Best Friends volunteers make it all possible – setting up the day, promoting the event, working with all the shelters and rescue groups, and making sure everything goers smoothly.
Several thousand people came to the event, and 490 of them took a new pet home.

Bunny love!
