Princess Helena

October 15, 2009 : 8:05 AM ET

You’ve got to hand it to any girl who can convince others to treat her like a princess. Helena the rabbit has her caregivers so well trained that they’ve even dubbed her Princess Helena — she’s got a crown drawn on the side of her nametag and everything. She knows how to live the high life. No slipping any peas under this girl’s mattress, that’s for sure!

Helena was one of the 300 rabbits to recently come to Best Friends from Michigan. These are the rabbits who began life in Reno, Nevada from a hoarding situation involving over 1,000 rabbits from a single backyard. She’s had quite the journey, no doubt, but still keeps her head held high no matter what happens along the way. In fact, that’s part of how she earned her title.

She injured her leg a little while back and had to come into the medical yurt for some special care. This is where she saw an opportunity to crank up the charm. For one thing, Helena has the whole poise and posture thing down pat. You really have to see her in person to appreciate how she can turn even the most common fuzzy blanket into a throne just by how she sits on the thing. Classic.

She’s gracious to all who meet her, and is never afraid to bestow a royal kiss. Perhaps one little habit of hers, however, trumps all others in earning the nickname. You see, Helena has discovered she loves the pampered life. The whole concept of being waited on hand and foot — standard treatment for any animal in medical recovery — has struck her as quite a nice way to live. Only one pesky little detail … she started to get better all too soon (for her tastes).

Not willing to part with her pampered ways, this princess has found the perfect solution. She’ll be cruising along just fine, hopping around her play area, until somebody strays within visual. At that precise moment, Helena switches gears and starts playing up the old injury. You know, the one that was all but invisible just moments before? Ah, yes. That sympathy card works every time. A good thing she has so many loyal subjects willing to play along!
