Sweet success

October 16, 2009 : 9:04 AM ET

There was once a time when Andrew the cat had to gaze longingly at the midnight snack trays. They were, plain and simple, up too high for him to reach. But a little motivation can work wonders.

Busted!

Busted!

Weight loss programs are very hard in any kind of a group setting for cats. If you don’t put down enough food for everybody, somebody won’t get enough to eat. And if you try and limit how long the food is down, you’ll learn quickly how fast a determined cat can scarf down some chow.

The upshot is that there are a few pudgy cats at Best Friends among the majority who choose to stay slim. Some like Andrew, however, become so overweight that they have to be culled from the general population and placed in special conditions in hopes of tightening up the belt line a little.

When Andrew used to live in a normal play area with other cats, food was everywhere. Back in the day, he made sure to gobble up everything he laid eyes on. He also had a highly developed knack for energy conservation. This guy could make a sack of potatoes look active! Even on walks, Andrew did all he could to resist movement, planting his hind end in the sand at every turn. No doubt, he was a good candidate for the biggest loser club over at Cat Headquarters.

There, much to Andrew’s dismay, the food bowls were up high. Oh the treachery! He had his portions for the day and all, but he couldn’t reach the snack bowls set out for the more agile cats. That’s about the time when Andrew decided there was at least one sport at which he would excel: the high jump!

The high jump. Score=10

The high jump. Score=10

In the beginning, he had to rely on stepping stools of sorts. He’d bounce off the furniture if anybody left a table or chair near the counters. And if a warm lap happened to be nearby? Ol’ Andrew had no qualms jumping up into that lap and then springing away to the food bowl just as the unsuspecting person would reach down to give him a pet. Hey, nothing wrong with a good scratch behind the ears, but nobody has ever doubted Andrew’s true first love.

Well, looks like all he needed was some proper incentive. After months of focused effort and a few lost pounds, Andrew can now jump straight up onto the counters! He has earned the extra snack now and again (there still isn’t a limitless supply of food up there). And how does Andrew feel about his accomplishments?

Animal behavior specialist Sherry Woodard dropped in at Cat Headquarters not long ago and happened to see Andrew there. Maybe it was a trick of the light or something, but Sherry glanced down at him and said, "Andrew, it doesn’t seem like you’re losing any weight."

His honest-to-goodness response? A wide-mouthed hiss! You’d have to know what a marshmallow he is normally to appreciate how out of character that response was. Maybe he was afraid they’d put the snacks even higher if they thought he wasn’t slimming down? Either way, congrats Andrew! Looking good.

Though obtaining snacks is one of Andrew’s goals, his true ambition is a home to call his own. He is available for adoption.

This is sooooo funny.....and people say animals don't understand what we are saying...this is proof of --oh HOW WELL-- they DO understand. Congratulations though, Andrew, on being healthier. Every happy cat needs to be able to jump up to a higher level and jump down without crumbling onto the floor as they land ! I have several cats, 2 are seriousl overweight, but both losing slowly, Apreil was 22 lbs....he is a BEAUTIFUL longhair solid black magnificent creature, down now to 16 lbs. And Sir Snuggles a dog loving tabby, was 19.5 and is down to 17.5. He is a scarfer and VERY indignant when not getting the response he wants when asking for food. It is never a dull moment !

He sounds like my formerly pudgy Patches! She's gone from 12.5lbs which isn't obese, but she was working her way there quickly, down to 9.5lbs which the vet says is ideal for her.

It wasn't easy as I've got 5 cats and they don't all get the same kind/amounts of food. They've also learned that the food bowls are only down for so long, and only available when I can watch them. She LOVES the "kibble toss" game -- I toss a kibble (or a treat) and she has to run to get it or one of my other cats will get it (my lean and lanky Alvin is a speed demon). She's even started learning some tricks to earn a treat.

Luckily Andrew has enough confidence not to take any comments too seriously ~ lol!

When we visited last month Andrew looked fabulous and had lost a good deal of weight. He was playing up a storm and running after a toy ball tossed across the room. He is still very interested in food, but also loves pets and attention.

Andrew has always been one of my favorites and have never understood why he hasn't found his forever home. We have wished we were in the position to take him home with us, but it has not been meant to be...Are you the one who sees the wonderful cat beneath that handsome exterior?

Well, yes, I know it's not healthy to be pudgy; but Andrew is ADORABLE! and if I had the room, I'd head on out there and sign up to adopt him. Because my clowder's at the limit, I'm praying Andrew winds someone else around his tail and that they come and scoop him up for a lifetime of love and (low-cal) treats! ;)

Andrew I know diets are a real pain (I have been on one for what seems like forever.....it is die with a 't' added!) but now look at you! What a handsome guy you are....a mere shell of your former self (well maybe not that small but still doing good)! Keep jumping Andrew! You are beautiful.

Oh how I know about trying to slim down a hefty hunk. My RogieBear will cry his heart out to get more food but exercise...how what did you say? I can't hear you?

He has come down to 21 lbs from a high of 25 in March but is still WAAAYYY to fat. He has diabetes and is not regulating with the insulin because of his FIV. Yeah, to BF for keeping Andrew on track... perhaps they should run a Biggest Loser Boot (butt) Camp for kitties like my Rogie. I would send him in a kibble second.

Oh Andrew! You look very svelte to me! The next time Sherry or anyone else makes a comment about your weight, please explain to them that with all your high jumping and other athletic training that's MUSCLE they see bulging under your handsome fur coat.

Andrew, you are looking good!! I like the smug look you have laying on the counter, it's like you are saying, You can't keep a fat boy down. You would fit right in at my house, with my 20 pounder, 18 pounder and a 15 pounder. Keep up the weight loss.
