Lucas the magnificent

May 21, 2009 : 2:14 PM ET

Ah, summertime at the sanctuary. Once the temperature approaches triple digits, the wading pools, sprinklers, water games and shade coverings come out. And there’s Lucas the Vicktory dog, frolicking in the snow. …

Okay, so it’s not exactly snow. But from a distance, the padding from dozens of stuffed animals, shredded and scattered, looks a whole lot the same! Lucas has always been an enthusiastic fellow. He knows how to get the most out of life, including play time with his toys. Want to give him an early birthday present? Send him a gigantic teddy bear and he’ll love you forever. Yeah, it may not last very long, but many thrills are short-lived. (Roller coaster rides, for example.)

Lucas has been that same happy, goofy dog ever since arriving at Best Friends. He’s the kind of guy who can make you smile on the worst of days. Tax audit headed your way? Say hi to Lucas and you’ll feel like you’re in Disneyland. This is a dog who wakes up excited every single morning. He craves being the center of attention, loves people, and lives for play. How can you not feel good around a guy who does a dance of joy every time you walk in his play area?

After nearly a year and a half at the sanctuary, Lucas is still making friends whenever possible. He’s always been a crowd pleaser, hamming it up for visitors and film crews alike. Not many dogs out there like to hop up on their dog house to be closer to the action. "Hey you! I’m up here!" But that’s Lucas, through and through.

Like all the Vicktory dogs, however, even Lucas has had some issues to work through. Maybe he doesn’t seem the type, but Lucas has shown a little fear in the past when visiting new places. In relocating to new play areas, for example, he even had difficulty eating until he grew more accustomed to his surroundings.

With help and encouragement, Lucas always manages to come out on top soon enough. Even so, his trainers and caregivers have been working hard to help him past those fears and hang-ups. The only thing constant is change, right? Lucas will be much better off if he can gain confidence with new things, as well as to overcome any other problems that may hold him back.

As such, dog trainer Ann Allums, along with the help of other trainers and caregivers, has come up with a life care plan for each of the Vicktory dogs, including Lucas. This is an ongoing, ever-changing plan that adapts to their needs. Included in the plan is everything from life priorities (training goals), training logs, sleepover records, assessments, and so forth. The life priorities are rewritten every week, depending on what needs attention.

For example, in the beginning they’d work on simple stuff with Lucas, like sit and down; then later added something a bit harder like riding in cars. In time, they moved on to stay, then loose leash walking, and so forth. All along, Lucas has made progress with confidence. He’s now moved on to some trickier stuff, such as Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training. The goal of the life care plans for each of the Vicktory dogs is to "bring out the best potential in all of them," Ann explains.

All the little details and results from the training go into a thick green binder. This provides a way to track progress and help reevaluate direction as needed. The great thing about this type of training is that it’s tailored to each dog. Lucas is a love sponge of the highest order, and he thrives on training and attention. Other dogs have a different MO. Thus, each has a life care plan that reflects his or her own individual quirks and needs.

The best part for Lucas is that he isn’t even aware he’s in a training program at all. For him, it’s just one big day at the park after another. He continues to live for visits from caregivers and is always on the lookout for new faces. Even though he can’t greet visitors in person (part of the court order on the Vicktory dogs), Lucas still enjoys saying hello through a fence. One volunteer, in fact, sat outside his play area one day and sang to him—oh, Lucas was in love!

So whether it’s licking the faces of his caregivers, or whipping up a toy stuffing snow storm in July, Lucas continues to be one happy dog. And if his caregivers have anything to do with it, that will only improve from here on out. What a character.

I am soooo happy for all of the Victory Dogs! BF, you're the greatest! How is it possible for anyone to EVER abuse or neglect these and all precious furbabies is beyond my comprehension. I hope all their days are happy and filled with love and that they NEVER EVER know another minute of heartache. God bless them and YOU, Best Friends, for all you do.....for the paws!

Ya gotta love that face!! Will the "vic" victims be up for general adoption, or will thier placements be handled differently? Thank the lord that Best Friends were there to be the bridge from prison to a happy life for all of them, you guys do remarkable work!

Please check with dogadoptions@bestfriends.org as I believe adoptions of the Victory dogs will be handled with tighter criteria.

Will Lucas ever be able to be adopted? He has come such a long way and I'm sure he would benefit from a forever home. But the next best place for him would be at BF. I would love to visit him and the other Vicktoy dogs soon, but I want to give kisses and belly rubs, is that possible? Terri

Unfortunatly, I was also unknowing how pit bulls are so affectionate, just reading all the bad press, etc. Then after adopting a few dogs (5-Husky mix, Siberian Husky (40#'s, would not eat/communicate now 54 lbs.as the trainer says very vocal - we talk and will have his CGD in 4 weels) 3 beagles (vocal, and would not walk on leash and an old lady 11 all walk on leash) I took each of them to a training class (THAT IS A KEY FOR ALL DOGS - NO MATTER AGE - my Siberian Husky was 7 when he starting his training - he had some but not much), the trainer loves her pit bulls, which of course I could not understand - then one class the dog next to me was a pit bull, what a crazy, goofy dog, and so loveable and Rascal "T" bealge (mine) that was a combination only a dog person could love, he was all legs and the beagle running around him and through him and he just was soo goofy - then I understand her love for them they provided the comic relief for the class and the trainer had to put us on another side of the room but that didn't last long A neighbor has a pit bull on my walk, loveable affectionate, loves to be petted, but just wants to vist her friends, that would be my dogs and looks for them, all I am doing is holding the leashes. As some one told me once, it is not the dog, but the person who owns the dog, determines the goodness of the dog. Thank you for doing such a good job with the "Vick" dogs and all your animals. I love your show, and do take some training tips from you. I am amazed how John Garcia, has with the pit bulls, it is a wonderful thing to watch! He has taken those wonderful dogs, so badly mistreated and with love, time and affection, has give them a second chance to become what they should have been in the first place! A wonderful job with LUCAS!!!!

I just want to say you have done a wonderful job with the victory dogs,i personally want to say thank you . What vic did to all of those innocent dogs is just the most heartbreaking thing i have ever seen.I have watched the the shows about the dogs many times and every time i cry my heart out, i know i should'nt because they have been saved and have a wonderful future now,but it gets to me every time. I have six pit bulls of my own and you could never tell they were dogs. They are a great breed and the most loving animal i have ever owned. Have fun Lucas sounds like you are , you may have scars from your past but your still very handsome!

Best Friends did an awesome job with the Victory Dogs, they also got the public to realize this breed is not a vicious breed that it has been portrayed in the past. These dogs are wonderful family dogs. At one point, I thought like the rest of the American public that was uneducated about Pit Bulls, - until I got one... I will never have another type of dog. I have even educated family members who were anti-Pit Bull.

They say Michael Vick deserves a second chance, but will he really change? How can someone who has no feelings for a living creature that "depends" on you to take "care" of them, but turns around and treats them inhumanely, someone who has a huge disregard for "life", change? can Michael Vick have "true" loving feelings for animals and work with them in a positive environment? Time will tell......

No it doesn't necessarily mean they will never be adopted. I was told that the Kane County Sheriffs Dept. did not want the dogs to have contact with the general public, BF employees only. It was a safety precaution. I'm not sure what the visiting rules for the dogs are at this point in time. I know a couple of months ago visitors could request to see them but they were not openly available to everyone. Access to the dogs will change as they improve with training and socialization.

I have the same question as merricourt....will the dogs be eligible for adoption at some point? I understand where the courts were coming from, but these pups deserve a second chance.

I am in love with Lucas and talk about him with my own golden retriever. We talk about how lucky Shingo (her name) is and how much we need to try to help others not so lucky. She gives me kisses and we both send kisses to all the residents at Best Friends.

I have a question? Does the fact that visitors are not allowed to greet the Vicktory dogs personally mean they can never be adopted? I thought that was the ultimate goal.

Lucas your face tells the horrible story how you were forced to live. Not long enough was Michael Vick in Jail for, as far as i am concerned he should have gotten life. Now Vick knows what its like to live inside a cage, i was hoping for someone to pull out his teeth like poor Georgia. I love everyone of the victory dogs, in a very special way. Every time i watch the airing of Saving the Michael Vick dogs just breaks my heart. There are many other dogs out there suffering, and need our help !! please if you know someone involved in dog fighting do not be afraid to report it to the police. Most of the time the State will offer a large cash reward.

Lucas, you are magnificent!!!! You are a pure example of not giving up or losing hope. I hope to meet you or at least get to see you on my trip to BF in October. You & the other Vicktory Dogs hold a special place in my heart, and it thrills me to know you all are doing so well. You (& BF) have shown the rest of the world what a little TLC can do!

BTW--that earlier entry about the "halo" in your Lucas pictures is amazing. I get chills every time I think about it. No doubt the halo following Lucas is not a fluke. He is an angel for sure!
