A Best Friends rapid response team is on the ground on the southwest shoreline of Galveston Bay, helping animals stranded by Hurricane Ike.

Rapid response manager Rich Crook’s team, whose services were requested by Galveston County Health District Animal Control to assist in recovery efforts, is working closely with shelter workers in Texas City, a port town on Texas’ Gulf Coast.

When the Best Friends team arrived on September 16, they were relieved to see that the shelter was in better shape than they had expected. But because power to the area was out, the animals were kept outside.

The team immediately went to work, making basic repairs to the building, setting up a generator and disinfecting the kennel areas. Once the shelter, which serves the Galveston County area, could function safely again, the animals were moved back inside.

With that, Best Friends achieved its first goal: getting the shelter operational to safely house animals at that location, Rich says.

In addition, the team will help with the search, rescue and recovery of animals, as necessary, in communities affected by the hurricane. In the meantime, team members are still assessing the search-and-rescue needs of the community.

On September 17, Rich toured the area with a police escort. “Devastation in Galveston is like Katrina without the water,” he said.

The shelter is in need of supplies such as pet food, flea treatment, de-wormer, disposable kitty litter pans and collapsible wire cages. The shelter’s address is Gdress is Galveston County Animal Shelter, 3412 Loop 197 North, Texas City, TX 77590.

An update on my earlier question about Whiskerville Animal Sanctuary: Their website says they are OK, their dogs were evacuated with foster parents and with the help of a local "pet resort". The Whiskerville kitties are safe at their shelter in Texas City, but they need funds to help with their generator to keep the air moving in the facility. Their website is www.whiskerville.org. They accept donations through PayPal.

I had been waiting for information about the plight of the animals in the wake of Ike. Thank you for sharing the news with us. As a previous poster noted, BF actually spends donated money helping the animals! Thank you for all you do. My husband and I will again be at the sanctuary to help out in early November and look forward to it!

I am in tears reading this most welcome news. Thank God there is a Best Friends for Animals. They truly save animals and don't squander the funds like some agencies that claim to be for the animals. God Bless everyone at Best Friends.

Thank you for your update. I've been so worried about the animals in South Texas and poor old Louisiana hit so hard by Ike. What a relief to see your logo on the truck in Galveston. I will help with $ as much as I can and pray for you and the animals.

Thanks so much for the update on the Rapid Response Team. They've been in my thoughts; knowing they were on the ground in Texas. It is amazing how much was learned from Katrina and seems to be making this year's disasters a bit more approachable. Thanks BF and the Rapid Response Team, you're the best.
