Pigs discover bedtime snacks

February 17, 2009 : 8:31 AM ET

Ah, the time-honored rituals of the bedtime routine. What kid in his right mind would choose to go to bed without a bedtime story? For Jack the pig, maybe he would indeed enjoy hearing tales about his namesake climbing a beanstalk to battle giants and make friends with geese who have a thing for precious metals. But he has a different agenda come bedtime, one that really rocks his world.

Bedtime snacks.

A while back, the pig caregivers were looking for healthy chew snacks for the pigs, something that would pass the time and keep their teeth clean, but wouldn’t have a lot of calories. They came across the perfect solution: dehydrated sweet potatoes! It’s a chew toy created for dogs, but the pigs think they were designed just for them. Think of the treat as a cross between potato chips and rawhide. These things are super tough. Most dogs, truth be told, lick them for a while until they soften up enough for chewing on.

Not Jack, though. He crunches them like crackers. He loves these things, and so do the other pigs. Good thing they’re healthy. They come in mighty handy for training, too.

Anyway, Jack has developed a new routine lately that he feels must be strictly observed. Simply put, he gets three sweet-potato bedtime snacks at the end of the day. Period. If he receives fewer than three (yeah, he counts ’em), Jack refuses to go to bed. He’ll stand there and stare up at his caregivers in shock and dismay. "What are you trying to do? You know the rules!"

It’s a good thing there are plenty to go around. Patrice Snook of Snookdog.com, the company that creates these little slices of paradise, has been donating them to the pigs at Best Friends. Patrice, from all the pigs at the sanctuary, thanks a ton for your generosity. Without you, poor Jack would’ve become an insomniac for sure!

Yvonne, that is so cool that you let Jack "make rounds" with you at night! What a fun piggy adventure for him (not to speak of the exercise and the "my kingdom" feel he must get).

Jack does usually work for these great snacks...when it's time for me to go do my rounds and check to be sure that everyone is safely tucked in and the door coverings on the houses are down to prevent cold drafts, Jack accompanies me! For those of you who have been here in Piggy Paradise, you know that Jack doesn't always do so well with other pigs...he's a bit of a bully and attention "hog" however he loves parading through the other pigs' yards with me after they've all gone to bed.

So you see, he's earning his treats by being my security guy at evening rounds!

I had the pleasure of meeting Patrice last fall in Portland, OR. Our conversation started because she saw the Best Friends charm on my necklace and told me about donating her snacks to the pigs at BF. I knew right there and then she must be a great person! My dogs love her snacks as well!

Jack is such a handsome pig, and smart. Apparently he's training the staff a piggy paradise very well. The next thing you know they will all be getting bedtime stories and little fleecy blankets. Oh yeah, Brittany already has that. The pigs deserve all the spoiling that they receive. Yvonne, give my girl Daphne a couple of yams for me. I'll get back there one of these days.

Oh my, Jack, I can see the bliss in your eyes! What a wonderful gift for the piggies. Gee, might be a new awesome diet idea for us humans! It would certainly keep us busy through an entire movie. Patrice, you are wonderful!! Does Britney also get some?

Many thanks to Patrice for supplying these yummy snacks to the piggies. I have to admit, they look sort of like dinosaur vertebrae, but they smell REALLY good!

Now we just need to find me a snack that's healthy that I'm nuts about!

I love Jack, he is such a little stinker. And I love that picture, Jack has Auntie Yvonne trained very well, doesn't he? :) Thank you to Patrice from a BF member for donating the chews to the pigs, I know they appreciate it!
