Turning the corner

See Merci now after her amazing recuperation.

There’s a lot more to the healing process than medications and time logged in at a clinic. When all is said and done, after everything the vets and caregivers can do, a lot is still up to the animal. And for Merci the dog, that side of the equation wasn’t looking very good when she came to Best Friends.

Merci was found in about as bad shape as a dog can be, and still be breathing. Truth be told, even the whole breathing thing was in question — the poor girl was barely alive. Found alongside a dumpster, Merci had a broken leg; she was full of ticks; she was starving, and she was dehydrated. What’s more, she had horrible skin infections and a systemic case of valley fever. Put another way, she already had one or two feet on the Rainbow Bridge and was getting ready to make a break for the other side.

She was rushed to Best Friends, where the first part of the healing process could happen. Fluids, medication, good food, expert care, and ultimately surgery on her leg pulled her back from the brink. But that was only part of the solution. From her side of things, Merci shut down emotionally and stayed that way for an entire month. Life had dropped her at the bottom of the heap and she had no intentions of getting back up again.

Even after the surgery that should have given her some strength back in her leg, Merci didn’t want to move. She was depressed, and she wasn’t going to try, no matter what. For that long month, her caregivers along with the medical team did all they could to help her, but she was struggling with her part. It seemed like she might never walk again.

There’s something funny that happens at Best Friends on occasion. Every now and again an animal will make such a dramatic turnaround that the caregivers start to wonder about alien abductions! (Okay, not really, but that’s as good an explanation as any.) Merci pulled off just such a turnaround. One day something clicked inside her and she decided to try to get up one more time.

From that point on, she has simply not been the same dog. The valley fever — which can be treated but never cured — continues to play tricks on her balance, but the difference this time is that Merci keeps right on walking anyway. She might wobble a bit as she goes, but she knows she’ll get there eventually! Besides, she’s getting stronger.

Truly, it’s almost like she woke up from a bad dream. All of a sudden Merci began noticing things for the first time, even though they’d been there all along. Things like … the cookie jar! Merci became so skillful at convincing visitors to give her treats from the cookie jar that her caregivers were forced to set out a bowl of more healthy treats just for Merci.

She’s also been attending several of the Jin Shin Jyutsu classes with instructor and Best Friends’ staffer Angela Rovetto. Angela says Merci has become the ultimate ham in the class, stealing the spotlight time and again. In fact, Merci’s newfound enthusiasm for life has started getting her into trouble. No longer content to wait for somebody to notice her, Merci likes to give little playful tugs on people’s pant legs to catch their attention. (She’s landed herself square into some basic obedience classes because of that stunt.)

There may still be some physical setbacks down the road for Merci. But she’s come so far in such a short time, it’s hard to imagine she won’t face those setbacks head-on. Way to go, Merci. You’re an inspiration to us all.

Talk about two very lucky dogs. It seems totally unbelievable to me that peolpe can be so cruel. I know it happens every where and all the time. But Thank God for Best Friends,I have been a member to many many organization to help animals ,but I can say this is the one that that keeps us most updated and informed. It is such an undertaking but with out your poor Merci and Flower who both suffered so terrible would surly have passed on. Thank You for there for them and each and everyone who needs you. On the way to an adoption event, our shelter manager pulled the dog bus over to pick up a little dog who had been run over. Both of her back legs were shattered. We took her to the best orthopedist we know, and she is now, with her hardware, healing and mobile enough to go for short walks to do her business. She is so happy to have been rescued, she squeals with delight whenever she sees us. When we brought her for her recheck, the vet told us that when he did the surgery, he found that the fractures were about ten days old! So she had been lying there by the side of the road, waiting to die for about ten days! We know her recovery will take awhile, but she has such an amazing spirit, we know she will come through better than ever. We named her Flower, as she smelled like a skunk when we found her.

I could cry when I read this story. I am so grateful for your patients with Merci. I have 2 puppy mill dogs and it's funny it takes them a while to come around and just like Merci they a light seems to go off for them and they begin to trust you a little at a time. Thank you for doing such great work. I wish you could move closer to my home town I would love to help with these animals. This will be the first year for a paid vacation and I really am thinking of coming out to visit.

Beautiful job to everyone at BF who helped Merci, and Merci, too! If not for all you involved in her care, she very likely would not have made this turn around. She knows she's safe, protected and loved. She knows she can trust again, or at begin to. Thank you for ALL you do!

I don't know how Valley Fever affects dogs, though I'm familiar with it in people--if it gets to the CNS(central nervous system), it can affect vision, perception, balance. It's possible that little Merci had visual disturbances that literally made it impossible to walk (double vision isn't uncommon) or she could have had disabling balance problems...or both! When these resolved, she was ready to take off! Just happy that she is well now...a great story from a great place!

merci, what an angel-- who just so happens to look like my kindred (near 3-year old black lab/boxer mix)-- this video brought tears to my eyes, but the ending is ALL that counts-- her happy tail wag, her joyful eyes (now..), that's all you can ever wish for for our precious 4-footed lovies.

I had the great fortune to meet Merci the day prior to her surgery (she was being spayed), saw her the morning of and then again the afternoon after while she was recovering. What a "wonder dog" she is! She was bouncing around (well, maybe a little wobbly) like nothing had happened. What a sweet, loving wonderful girl she is!! And a real survivor!!!! It's easy to fall in love with this girl!! Sandy Benson, Orlando, FL

Merci was the official greeter at Dogtown the week we were there in September. On Saturday she was very wobbly and shy, just lying on her blanket. By the end of the week she was running around greeting everyone and loving the attention. The change in that short time was amazing! She is a real sweetheart.

Merci! I fell in love with this sweet girl when visiting Best Friends with my family in September.

Here's a video I took of her then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvHKsls2f4k
