Policy summit

February 23, 2009 : 8:44 PM ET

The Humane Society of the United States on February 23 issued an interim policy recommending all dogs be evaluated as individuals, and is calling a meeting of leading animal welfare organizations concerning dogs victimized by dog fighting.

Wayne Pacelle, chief executive officer and president of the Humane Society of the United States, suggested the meeting of major stakeholders in Las Vegas to work through the associated issues. This meeting is in response to concerns expressed by Best Friends Animal Society in December 2008 regarding HSUS policies related to animals confiscated in dog-fighting busts.

Pacelle said the meeting, scheduled for April, will include the participation of national stakeholder organizations that deal with pit bulls. The meeting was in the planning stages before Superior Court Judge Ed Wilson Jr. ruled that 145 pit bulls, including approximately 70 puppies, confiscated from Wildside Kennels in Wilkes County, North Carolina, would be euthanized without evaluation to determine suitability for placement.

The new interim policy announced by the HSUS, pending the outcome of the meeting, recommends that local law enforcement and animal control evaluate such dogs as individuals rather than as a category before any decision is made regarding their future.

“We expect government, corporations, and individuals to constantly re-evaluate how they deal with animal issues,” Pacelle said. “Likewise, we regularly review our own policies and procedures here at HSUS, and we think it is important to talk with professional colleagues in the movement to examine issues related to the disposition of fighting dogs.

“I am pleased to discuss these issues with personnel from Best Friends and other organizations interested in the welfare of pit bulls.”

Julie Castle, director of Community Programs and Services for Best Friends said, “There had been more than enough airing of feelings and outrage that the dogs were not evaluated prior to being summarily euthanized. It was time to hit the reset button on this in order to move things forward in a constructive way. Mr. Pacelle was open and receptive to what we had to say and we are looking forward to our meetings in April.”

Best Friends, through its campaign, “Pit Bulls: Saving America’s Dogs,” is looking forward working cooperatively with HSUS, according to Castle.

The campaign is aimed in part at educating the public and the media about pit bulls in order to help save the breed’s reputation. “Our goal is to bring positive change to lives and image of pit bulls,” she said.

Best Friends, while you're talking to the HSUS, can you please tell them to go no-kill?

This would solve the "fighting dogs should die" problem as well as the problem of millions of cats and dogs being murdered in so called "shelters" every year.

In short, it'll solve everything, just about.

Tell the HSUS that if they want to continue calling themselves the HUMANE society, that they better get their act together. Murdering healthy cats and dogs is NOT HUMANE, it is cruelty in of itself.

I know that you like to be diplomatic and friendly and that is great, but sometimes you have to get tough and tell someone the naked truth. Especially when millions of precious living souls face the death penalty this year, though they have not committed any crime.

Enough of this cat and dog holocaust.

Let's end the killing, and stop playing nice. Playing nice only excuses the killing.

Image is nothing. Results are everything.

When these so called "humane" groups, and "animal welfare" groups are part of the problem and not part of the solution, it is a disservice to cats and dogs everywhere,if we fake smile and shake hands with these groups and play nice with them, and thus hide the anger that we have towards these groups for being killers, we are engaging in politics, not change.

Only when we call killers out and expose them for what they are (murderous hypocrites) can we expect change

The HSUS has a history of saying one thing to appease animal lovers, while doing another, while stabbing animals and those who love them, in the backs. They dont deserve a handshake and a smile. Because kill "shelters" use the "Humane Society" as an excuse to kill. The HSUS hs been part of the euthanasia (murder) problem, not part of the solution.

Take them to school and take them to task for the irresponsible hypocrisy on their part, which has allowed them to lobby that "euthanasia is the only solution" to the "pet overpopulation problem".

That is a myth as discussed here:

www.nathanwinograd.com

Murdering healthy living souls is never the solution.

Unless, you're Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer or Josef Stalin.

And they dont have much credibility......then again neither does the HSUS these days, because they still lobby to kill animals, instead of lobbying for everyone to go no-kill.

"See yourself in others, then whom can you hurt (or kill)...then what harm can you do?" -Buddha

Only when we speak the facts -killing is not humane- will things change, because first attitudes have to change.

I understand the reason for wanting to join forces with HSUS and help them understand the true nature of our wonderful pitties but, this is a group that has made it a goal to kill our breed. The statements made about the dogs in the last bust made me so angry that they would out right lie to save face and not have to deal with the reality of dog fighting. This is a group of people who know nothing about pits and have the gull to speak as if they do. I do rescue in St. Louis and it makes me furious when people who know nothing about this breed condem it without even meeting a true pit bull. I wish Best Friends nothing but the best in working with HSUS but keep your eyes and ears open as I would not trust a word they say. Everytime they have been involved as far a pitties are concerned they have done more harm than good. We are still fighting BSL daily because of all the good they do our breed.

I hope that Best Friends can convince HSUS of the errors of their ways. Should we start with Hurricane Katrina? Starting of BSL to fullfil HSUS agenda?

I have to admit when I read the article my blood was boiling with distain toward HSUS. There attacks on pit bulls have been so negative and leaves people who love the breed very sour towards HSUS. The damage HSUS have done towards pits will take years to reverse.

HSUS is a toxic organzation and people need to really check into its history. Hats off to Best Friends that are trying to change the minds of HSUS. Maybe Best Friends positive influence will save additional pitties and HSUS will leave pit bulls alone.

I love my dogs and hope that HSUS will start leaving my breed alone.

I'm so glad that this is taking place. Talking things out, comparing notes, is the first step toward change. We have two pit-bull mixes within our pack, and they are both sweet, loving dogs. The older of the two, Chance (as in Second Chance), was a rescue. Thrown from a moving vehicle as a pup, he was saved from the lake he landed in. The guilty party was not only dumb enough to commit this heinous act in front of a multitude of witnesses, but actually admitted that he did it because the pup was the runt of the litter, too small for fighting! Too bad the man he told this to happened to be a Deputy Sheriff. I'm happy to say that all the man's animals were seized, and the rest of Chance's littermates went to foster homes. His mother, a breeder not a fighter, actually went home with one of the deputies, and has been officially adopted. Unfortunately, the sire of the pups could not be saved. But I am very happy to report that this incident resulted in jail time for the idiot responsible, and he has been banned from owning animals in the future. As for Chance, he weighs in at a whopping 65 pounds, although I guess that's still small for a mastiff / pit mix.
