Get your ‘Phil’ of the Vicktory dogs

September 15, 2009 : 8:44 AM ET

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, some five million to seven million viewers of the popular “Dr. Phil” talk show will get a look at the Vicktory dogs at Best Friends Animal Society.

A segment of the show will be devoted to NFL quarterback Michael Vick, who recently suited up with the Philadelphia Eagles and returned to the football field after serving a 23-month sentence on a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge.

But more importantly, the segment will feature some of Vick’s victims — 22 of whom came to Best Friends in January 2008 to heal from the trauma they suffered at the hands of Vick and others in his dogfighting ring.

I'm a lover...

I'm a lover...

“What is important to us is that people consider the dogs,” says Ed Fritz, campaign specialist for ‘Pit Bulls: Saving America’s Dog,’ one of four Best Friends’ campaigns aimed at reaching the goal of No More Homeless Pets. “There’s a lot of talk about Michael Vick and if he deserves a second chance, but no one is talking about the dogs. Don’t these dogs deserve a second chance? As long as Vick is playing with the NFL, it’s up to us to support the victims of his cruelty. Michael Vick didn’t serve one day in prison for animal cruelty. He was punished for dogfighting conspiracy.”

Vick has apologized publicly, but many question his sincerity.

“To our knowledge, neither Vick, his handlers, nor the NFL has called to ask how the dogs are doing,” wrote Best Friends co-founder Francis Battista in a moving commentary in the Philadelphia Inquirer. “And these very real, living victims of the crime are nowhere to be found in the continuing debate about Vick’s rehabilitation.” Read the entire commentary here.

Keeping attention on the dogs

To keep attention on the dogs, Best Friends is teaming up with shelters and rescues across the country to hold Wagging Tailgate Parties in conjunction with the Eagles game schedule. The purpose of these community driven events is to get pit bulls into loving forever homes and to encourage people to donate food and other items on a shelter’s wish list.

“What we’re trying to do is take the conversation away from Vick and shine the light on the dogs,” Fritz says.

To read an update on the first Wagging Tailgate Party, click here. The Philadelphia Inquirer was also on hand to cover the event — click here for that story. Best Friends will be supplying an easy-to-follow guide on how to organize your own Wagging Tailgate Party at your local shelter. To get the Eagles game schedule, click here.

These Wagging Tailgate Parties are also increasing awareness about the challenges these dogs face and dispelling some of the fiction about these wonderful dogs. Thanks to widespread myths, unfair stereotyping and misinformed media hype, pit bulls, who years ago were America’s most beloved dogs, have become the outcasts of society. Indeed, many communities have enacted breed-discriminatory laws and ordinances that have banished them altogether.

The real truth

But the truth is that pit bulls can make the best family dogs. Ironically, it’s their loyal nature, their eagerness to please, that are the very qualities that make them easy prey for dogfighters.

Because of the myths that surround them, and because of the abuse they suffer at the hands of dogfighters and others who exploit them, many of these dogs end up in shelters where they’re often unfairly labeled unadoptable. In many shelters, pit bulls make up the majority of dogs being killed, not because of anything they’ve done, but simply because of what they look like.

Best Friends is working to help these dogs. Read more about what Best Friends is doing to help pit bulls, and about what you can do to help these wonderful dogs, here.

The “Dr. Phil” episode featuring the Vick dogs at Best Friends will be broadcast live from Philadelphia Wednesday, Sept. 16. Check your local listings for the time and channel in your area.

I was born in Philadelphia and have lived here my entire life. I am now ashamed of my hometown. Not only the Eagles but the mayor and many of it's citizen's. The whole "second chance" comment is ridiculous. He didn't get drunk one night and decide to fight a couple dogs. This was a professional operation where he funded the torturing and murdering of many defenseless dogs for many years. And his "apology" was a joke. He basically smirked and said he was sorry to hurt his own career.

Pit Bulls by nature are loyal! They were trying to make him happy! I too have written to every sponser of the Eagles and Mayor Nutter. We now have an increase on dog fighting cases in Philadelphia according to a recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. It's heart breaking.

Michael Vick wants a second chance and plays the part of a man who has seen the errors of his ways - as stated "plays the part." If he was truly sorry he would try to redeem himself as a person who would like to make up for so much sorrow and death "HE" incurred on these beautiful animals. What has been learned here is how Best Friends has brought his horrific actions to light but has taught so many of us how absolutely beautiful the Pit Bull breed.

Michael Vick is sorry for only one thing - that he got caught. And he wasn't even tried for or convicted of the crime of animal abuse and murder - only dogfighting. I wrote the Philadelphia Eagles and told them that are as guilty as he is by hiring him. And I wrote the commissioner of the NFL and told him that I will never watch another pro football game, that he has endorsed Vick's crime. And shame on the Humane Society for believing that Vick is sorry and that he will stop others from getting into dogfighting. Baloney! The only message is that you can murder dogs, do a few months in prison and get away with it. Best Friends has, as always, taken the right positon and has not bought into Vick's "apology." I will forever support Best Friends and give as much as I can when I can.

I just read the list of sponsors for the Eagles, and I don't use a single one of them as it is.

Darn!

I have always had an unfounded fear and judgemental view of pit bulls, until reading the stories of the Vicktory Dogs and the information that Best Friends provides about them. I can see the love and gratitude in each Vicktory I have seen pictures of. I can't even put into words the contempt I feel for MV or anyone who does this. The sad thing is that it probably happens more than we know. Maybe the notoriety of this case will help to save more dogs from this horrific way of life. This has been a very good lesson for me, too, as not to be so judgemental.

What kind of an example are we setting for children? That it is ok to abuse/hurt/torture/kill innocent animals, get slapped on the wrist, then reward him by letting him play sports and make alot of money! He will never be able to repay in any way for what he has done. He needs to suffer more than those poor babies did. I can't wait to see the Eagles suffer financially for hiring him. And they will. He is scum, you notice I won't even mention his name. He is a waste of breath. And I don't want to breathe the same air that he does.

I have never had the slightest interest in football and Mr. Vick certainly won't tempt me to become a fan.

I would like to know where I can get a list of Philly Eagles sponsors so that I can not only boycott them and encourage others to do the same, but make sure they know about it.

Those of us who have been picking up the tab to pay for the care and rehabilitation of these dogs need to demand that Vick be made to step up to the plate. I wonder if there is some legal recourse that could be taken by or on behalf of Best Friends and the other groups rhat have been caring for his dogs. It is obscene that he isn't made to make restitution since he doesn't seem inclined to do it on his own. All you legal eagles out there think about that.

As for Denver - make sure none of your money goes there and make sure they are told why - that includes any business you might order from over the net that is located there. Always remember - Money Talks.

Of course Micheal Vick has never asked about the dogs, simply because he DOES NOT CARE...all he has ever cared about was getting out of jail and getting back on his feet, repaying all his debts are the only thing he is interested in, and I for one, am hoping he fails as a Phila. Eagle, nothing would be more fitting.

As a resident of the Philadelphia area and a member of the PSPCA, I was not aware of this event. Shame on the PSPCA for not notifying members. I have three cats however I am a "cheerleader" for pit bills. They are surely a misunderstood brreed.

As for the Eagles, never followed football and certainly do not care too after "hiring" Michael Vick. He is "trying" to make amends by working with the Humane Society. Many residents of this area feel how he could also make amends would be to dontate $1 million of the 1.5 million is getting paid by Jeffery Laurey and the Eagles to Best Friends.

Anyone agree?

Since Vick is now getting a salary of more than 1 million dollars, I think he should start sending some money back to Best Friends and the other rescue groups to pay back some of the costs for the care of these animals.

I live in the UK and was really upset to learn that The Philadelphia Eagles will be in town when I visit San Diego in November. So I'm really interested in hearing about the Wagging Tailgate Parties and hope I may get to attend one during my stay!! I'm a regular visitor to the USA - once or sometimes even twice a year however the thought that Michael Vick will be in the same city as me is sickening. Thanks to Greycat for the list of sponsors which I will now avoid, both in the UK and US. Vick has never taken responsibility for his actions and we - animal lovers - will never forget what he did. Best Friends are doing a wonderful job in terms of rehabilitation of the Vick dogs and also by raising awareness of programmes such as Ellen and Dr Phil.

I missed the show. I did not get the email until after the show had aired. Do you know if it will air again, or how I can see it?
