It was such a hit last year that Green Earth Travel, a company specializing in vegetarian vacations, has decided to do it again: provide an all-inclusive travel package combining a volunteer experience at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with a breathtaking jaunt to the Grand Canyon.
Totaling six days and five nights, the trip kicks off at Best Friends, where you’ll spend three nights in the sanctuary’s cabins or cottages with the beautiful red-rock cliffs of Angel Canyon as a backdrop, and two days volunteering in one or more of the animal areas. There, you will get to know the animals and assist in their care. Previous participants have relished this experience of being with the animals, contributing to their welfare, and knowing that a percentage of their travel fee is helping Best Friends care for them.
Best Friends provides participants with vegetarian meals at Angel Village, meals made all the more delicious with the breathtaking views of Angel Canyon and the distant White Cliffs.
From Best Friends, it’s off to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with Adventure Bus Travel, Green Earth’s partner this year. Adventure Bus Travel provides just about everything you’ll need while staying under the ponderosas at the North Rim campground, including tents, sleeping pads and three square vegetarian meals a day. Best of all, the campground is within a few minutes’ walk to several Grand Canyon overlooks.
During the three days at the North Rim, the choice of activities is yours; you can hike along the rim, venture into the canyon, or take a guided nature tour.
Starting at $983 per person, the package includes transportation from the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas to Best Friends, from Best Friends to the North Rim, and from the North Rim back to the Luxor. A percentage of the travel fee is donated to Best Friends.
The first trip is May 26–31; the second is August 10–15.
