Urgent: Volunteer rescuers needed

October 21, 2005 : 3:35 PM ET

We have received the following alert from Brenda Shoss of the Kinship Circle - on behalf of Animal Rescue New Orleans. Best Friends is working with these grassroots groups, and is helping to care for the animals being rescued and to place them in foster homes.

If you'd like to volunteer with the Kinship Circle, read the following carefully and send an e-mail to them at info@kinshipcircle.org, with a copy to kathim@bestfriends.org.

Thanks for helping!

------------------------

I am Brenda Shoss, of Kinship Circle, helping coordinate Animal Rescue New Orleans with Jane Garrison and David Meyer. We have been sending volunteers and supplies to animal rescue units across the storm states. Yesterday, for example, one of our rescuers discovered Bingo, a dog so desperate for water he'd crawled into a bathtub. Too weak to haul his little body out, he could not lift his head or stand. But he is alive and now under veterinary care. Please let the tremendous wills inspire you to travel to New Orleans as soon as you can. We plan to stay active through end of November.

IF YOU CAN COME, PLEASE SEND THE FOLLOWING TO info@kinshipcircle.org and indicate that you were sent by Best Friends. (If you have already sent this, DO NOT SEND AGAIN)

*Your full name / Name of organization (if applicable)
*Full street address, including city and state
*Cell phone, land phone, email
*Brief description of experience with animals, including professional, rescue, shelter, etc.

I just left Camp Katrina, the animal rescue site for the Humane Society of Louisiana, last Wednesday on 10/19. As of that time, they needed volunteers desperately.

I urge anyone who is thinking about going, to just do it! This group was small, very dedicated, and a wonderful place to work. They are located in Tylertown, right next door to Best Friends' site. It was one of the most wonderfully satisfying experiences of my life. Be prepared to work hard, but it is so much better to go down there to help than to sit at home crying.

You can confirm a current need by emailing them through their website at www.humaneLA.org. I got a prompt reply from Dana Nesbitt when I contacted her prior to my trip. They even sometimes have extra tents available for volunteers if you can't bring your own. And now they even have hot showers. The people are wonderful, and the animals really need you. Ignore your fears and anxiety about the unknown...you will be forever grateful that you went, I promise!

found on Pasadosafehaven.org!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!

URGENT UPDATE: 10/21 8:38pm pm PST Your help is needed NOW!

CROSSPOST WIDELY PLEASE!

Dozens of pitbulls, who we rescued, walked, hugged, and cared for for days, were transferred to a shelter in Arkansas named EDNA (Every Dog Needs a Home) after the Humane Society of Louisiana, as well as Best Friends had sent animals there. We also had volunteers travel to EDNA and return stating that animals were well-cared for. After these credible recommendations, PasadoRescue chose to place non-aggressive pitbulls with EDNA.

From what we can tell, Ms. Hanson has been under attack for years for caring for pitbulls by various local Arkansas groups, warranted or not. Tonight, spurred on by these local groups, sheriff's deputies raided Ms. Hanson's facilities and charged her with animal cruelty. We understand they are threatening to kill dogs tomorrow.

We understand that the veterinarian who assisted the sheriff in the raid stated these animals are vicious. We know, for a fact, that the animals that we transported to this facility were on our laps, able to be hugged, loved, fed by hand. This is untrue. He also stated that none of these animals had been treated by a veterinarian prior to transport to AR. Also not true. ALL the animals transported were all under the care of licensed veterinarians. We have records to prove it.

If these animals were not well cared for by Ms. Hanson, then we agree that animals need to be removed. And PasadoRescue will gladly take care of all transport and care. But NO LAW ENFORCEMENT ENTITY has a right to kill these animals. These are the pets of hurricane victims. People are still trying to find their animals.

You need to call the Baxter County Arkansas Sheriff and Arkansas State Attorney General's Office and tell them that killing these animals is killing someone's pet. Someone's property. And they will be legally liable. Sheriff John Montgomery: Tel 870-425-7551 or 870) 425-622 Fax: 870-425-1669

EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA

If you are able bodied, have a car that will get you to New Orleans, can go Sunday or early Monday for long enough to be on the ground there four of five days or longer and help Garrison or Martin folks, and would like to get out of the potential path of Wilma for a week-- I can help with gas money.

I will want to meet you, suspiciously inspect you-- my own driving range is not much over two hours, say from KSC up to daytona-ish, down to vero-ish, over to the west side of orlando. I will drive to see you. ...you're going to have to scuttle to get off the peninsula before Wilma bears down, and the traffic up 75 and even us 1 is going to be fierce. EMAIL ME AT krycekATgbronlineDOTcom, if I get multiple answers I can't afford more than one probably, so if you can get somebody up there to vouch for you having been there before you'll be preferred. GAS MONEY ONLY, bring your own everything else.....

WINN DIXIE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS DESPERATELY!

Just spoke with Sherry Korniloff. Winn Dixie is alive and well and needs volunteers until the 14th of November!

DESPERATELY needs someone familiar with cats to care for them! (cat lady is leaving tomorrow). Also needed are dog walkers and whatever else you can do to help out in camp.

Free coffee! Need to be fairly self sufficient, bring air-mattress, camping equipment, etc. No electricity but water is now plentiful. Hot during day, but cool in eve.

If you want to come, just come. Don't miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime to help these animals.

Have contact phone number. If needed, e-mail shirley_mondeaux@msn.com.

God bless Kinship Circle/Animal Rescue New Orleans and other groups who are continuing the animal rescue in New Orleans. These people are truly God's angels on earth.

I can't immagine how emotionally wrenching and heartbreaking this is at this stage, and I am remembering all of the rescuers and the animals still waiting for rescue in my prayers. I pray that God comforts and strengthens the rescuers and the animals. I know that God is there to help those animals who do not survive to cross over the Rainbow Bridge.

Best Friends: Besides prayer, what is the best way for us to help these animals and the rescue effort if we are not able to go to New Orleans, or if we are not emotionally able to do this very heartbreaking work?

Bless you, best friends, for putting this where so many people will see it and realize help is still needed.

We're doing our best to find out whether humane society of louisiana, also t-town, also needs volunteers. There've been several desperate cries about them on the web, somebody is trying to find out from them direct via email.

Thank you, thank you, _thank_ you for putting this on your site!
