Dear Friends, I know rescuing humans is the priority but when houses are searched & marked as empty, couldn't there be a mark put on the house or apt. as to whether or not an animal is alone there, needing rescue by the wonderful people who are trying to reach as many of them as possible. Could you forward this idea to the proper authorities? Thanks, JLP, Memphis - where we’re doing all we can to help.

In Genesis 9:9-10, as stewards of God’s creation, we are reminded that God made covenants with animals just as with humans: "Behold I establish My Covenant with you and with your seed after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the fowl, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that go out of the ark, even every beast of the earth."

Sep 5th, Karen D posted an effort to consolidate VA supply donations, but provided no email or phone number. I beleive this is easily do-able. They are sending truck after truck out of the Lorton VA area with supplies for people victims because the response has been so overwhelming. Bet we could get a full truck load of animal supplies together PDQ? I want to help - please contact me at jeaneustice2@msn.com. Thanks!

There are a lot of us in Utah (home to the wonderful Best Friends) that would love to foster or adopt animals affected by the hurricane. No More Homeless Pets in Utah is making a trip to pick up approximately 100 animals that were up for adoption in the areas affected by Katrina to bring to a Super Adoption in Salt Lake City, UT in a week and a half. One big problem is in Salt Lake County and others we are only legally allowed to have 2 dogs and 2 cats. There are a large group of people that have the means and the space to care properly for more. If in Utah contact your local animal shelters to request the limits be lifted so responsible pet owners can help these and other animals in need.

God bless you all. I wish I were 20 years younger and living in the USA I'd be in there like a shot, but I can't so the best I can do is donate. I didn't find your site until after I had already donated $300 to both IFAW and The Humane Society of the United States so I am so deeply sorry I can't afford to send as much to you. I have my own cat sanctuary and am always in need myself, but your need is greater than mine at this terrible time. My 34 cats and 2 dogs don't know how lucky they are to be here in England where we don't suffer such violent storms. I will put a link to your site from my site and ask others here in the UK to do the same then pray very hard that the British people will take the opportunity to donate to Best Friends. There are no words to express my gratitude to all you wonderful people who help our animal companions. GOD BLESS YOU ALL

I've been reading through all these encouraging notes to BestFriends and am truly grateful for each and every volunteer, and worker out there helping save the animal victims of Katrina.

I've just remembered that I have a small credit of around $15-$20 at Pet Health Pharmacy in AZ. My 16 year old cat Micia no longer needs the meds (may miracles never cease!) so I would really love to donate this credit to help BF add to the needed meds for your animals.

Please email me so we can coordinate a 'script with the Pet Pharmacy & shipping of it to BF Hurricane Relief c/o Leigh Breland 1635 Misty Lane Terry, MS 39170. Shipping is $4 which I'll pay myself (or maybe they'll donate it this time?!) so we can get the most out of the credit on file.

God Bless all you are doing BF, Leigh & Roger et al !!!

I just read an article about extra dog food available. Maybe someone from BF can contact them if they don't know about it already. Quote from article: (from Associated Press)

----------------------------------

WASHINGTON (Sept. 5) Displaced survivors in the Houston Astrodome can choose from counterfeit and abandoned clothing, toys, and even dog food. More than 100,000 items were quickly taken from warehouses and more will follow, said Kristi Clemens, spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection division.

The agency has some 1 million items stored, and Customs officials are going through their inventory to see what else would be useful. While the initial shipment went to Texas, officials are looking toward a wider distribution, Clemens said.

For humans, virtually anything that you can wear is available: underwear, jeans, baseball caps, T-shirts, shoes and socks. For dogs: much needed food. For children, toys. For everyone: clean sheets and blankets.

Clemens said officials are looking for locations to deliver items in Louisiana and Mississippi, and then will scout for shelters in other states.

-----------------------------------------

Hope this helps. I'll post this info on other areas of this site.

I would be more than willing to volunteer at your sanctuary or at ground zero. I have experience in emergency situations with dogs, horses and farm animals. I can take five days off work. I can also offer a foster home for a couple of dogs here in the SE Fl area. I just want to help these poor innocent animal souls.

I have been a member almost since your beginning. I have watched you grow and do wonderful work.

I did not know you were involved in the KATRINA disaster. I just found out today while watching CNN They mentioned your name in passing. I wish I could send you more, but I had made a donation to the Louisiana Animal Shelter the other day.

I am glad you can accept donations via the web and VIsa. Look for it on our website right after this.

I contacted one of the large Pet Supply companies that checked to see and they said that there were deliveries going out to Terry, MS, but NOT to Tylertown! They said UPS was usually cheaper for them. I have just ordered some s/sbowls, collars, leashes, latex gloves, disinfectant concentrate, vet-wrap and syringes from KV VET SUPPLY that has a NO SHIPPING CHARGE on orders over $50.00 as long as each item does not exceed a certain wt. Of course it is a holiday so it won't go out till Tuesday, darn it, but it should be there by Thursday. It is a very good company and I told them we were counting on them coming through for all the animals!! Now I'm going to order food to be delivered to Terry, MS. Has Best Friends heard anything from the big dog food companies yet? Ann from Cleveland, Ohio

Some of the faculty in my department at my university (UConn) generously turned the first meeting of an academic workshop series into a drive for animal rescue supplies! They are wonderful! I have questions about shipping though. A quick check of the USPS site seems to suggest that the Terry MS address might be only receiving partial service currently. UPS quotes extremely high rates, although FedEx seems reasonable. Does anyone have any advice on shipping companies/options? And also, is it reasonable to assume we can plan to send supplies well into the coming weeks? Thanks, Laura S.

NancyW, I am in Michigan approximately 5-6 hrs. drive from the city of Chicago. If there is a shipment of supplies into Tylertown I might be willing to assist with the delivery. Obvisouly, it would need to be coordinated through BF to make sure it could get through once it arrives down there.

I'm planning to send items through the mail also to the Terry, MS address. I work for a major retailer and plan on hitting my employer up for some donations. k9trainer.....where are you located if you don't mind me asking? I'm in IL--about 30 miles south of Chicago. It would be great if we could all coordinate somehow to get supplies down to them in Tylertown. Thanks to Best Friends for their wonderful work and for all of you for caring!!

I have called a couple of the large companies about shipping to Mississippi and they will NOT go to the Tylertown location of the St Francis Animal Sanctuary. We MUSTsend it to the address in Terry, MS BEST FRIENDS HURRICANE RELIEF c/o Leigh Breland 1635 Misty Lane Terry, MS 39170

No mail is yet going thru to Tylertown either.I am going to arrange for some food tonight to be shipped and also some supplies like adjustable collars, s/s bowls, co-flex bandages, syringes, exam gloves and if I can stretch my budget, some general disinfectant safe for kennels, people etc. as I'm sure they can use that. Is anyone lese out there planning on sending direct? Ann from Cleveland, Ohio

I know BF is very busy and I'm assuming this is the reason I haven't heard a response via the hrf@bestfriends.org e-mail. I am willing to target local major retailers for donations and even haul the supplies to affected areas. I also have someone who is a licensed bus driver if someone needs a driver. Additionally, I have a lot of professional skills that I've offered, but I have not heard back from BF. I'm trying to be patient as long as I know the e-mails are going to be responded to. Thanks!

I ordered a 14x14 screen house and some paper goods, etc (tp, paper towels, wipes, sanitizer, hand cream) from Amazon to send to BF. I joined their Prime Club to get faster shipping, which hopefully will work. The screen house is a bargain at Amazon and is the Columbia Octagonal Screen house, in case anyone else wants to check it out. Without A/C, shade will be essential. Barbara West Texas

Ok - now you can accept donations - if I go to PetEdge or Omaha Serum or KV Vet Supply and order some of the items will they get to you? If so, let us publish some of the phone numbers for these sources so people can start ordering and get the stuff to Best Friends. Ann in Cleveland
