Lost and Found!

LOST AND FOUND RESOURCES

For those of you who have lost your pets during Hurricane Katrina, here is a list of suggestions and resources to help you get started on the search for your best friend.

Try to return to your home yourself to recover your pet. Rescuers in the region are working at full capacity, but are unable to reach all the animals in need. This way, you will know if your animal has been rescued. Some rescuers have been leaving notices on the door which will help you know who to call or where to go.

Animals rescued through the Best Friends relief effort have been entered into an easy-to-navigate database. Just click on “Find Your Pet.” This list of animals is being constantly updated, so check it often. If you have already seen a photograph that you believe is your pet, and you have already notified us, then you do not need to contact us again. We will be in touch with you just as soon as possible.

Be sure to go to the Petfinder Animal Emergency Response Network at http://disaster.petfinder.org/emergency where you can SEARCH the list of FOUND animals, and POST your LOST pet. This information is being constantly updated, so continue to check it often.

When reporting your missing pet, be sure to provide as much of the following information as possible:

- Full name of pet(s) guardian
- Contact phone numbers for pet(s) guardian
- Contact phone numbers for person searching on behalf of pet(s) guardian
- Address where pet(s) were trapped or last seen
- Pet’s name
- Species
- Breed
- Age
- Whether spayed or neutered
- Microchip information
- Weight at time of disappearance
- Photographs, if you have any
- Detailed physical description with distinguishing marks or other unique characteristics
- Special medical needs, known health problems or disabilities
- Was pet wearing a collar or tag (if, so describe)
- Date of separation if known, and circumstances of separation
- If a note was left at your house, include ALL of the information in the notice

Animals are also being logged and checked into Pet Harbor (Chameleon) so go to http://www.petharbor.com on a regular basis, as well.

Additionally, http://www.loststbernardpets.com has been established to list pets lost in St. Bernard Parish.

People without Internet access should call the Disaster Call Center at 1-800-HUMANE1

Thousands of rescued animals have been transported to foster homes all around the country. For a list of shelters and organizations that accepted Katrina animals, click here and then on the PDF file. Please note that this list is updated constantly, so continue to check it often.

below is a copy of an email that was forwarded to me:

Best Friends is hosting a "Locate Your Lost Katrina Pet" event in New Orleans from December 16-18.

We know it has been difficult, or even impossible, for families who are missing their pets to navigate all of the available resources.

This event will allow you to search in one place for your missing pets. We will set up banks of computers and give families the opportunity to work with reunion specialists to search for their pets - on a first come-first served basis.

We have asked numerous groups, including Mutt Shack, Grassroots Emergency Animal Rescue (at the Winn Dixie), Humane Louisiana, and Pasado's Safe Haven to participate, bringing their databases and intake records. We have invited Petfinder, Stealth Volunteers, and other reunion specialists to participate as well.

Here are some of the pertinent details:

Where: Garden District Hotel 2203 St. Charles Avenue (corner of Jackson and St. Charles Avenues) New Orleans, LA 70130 University Conference Room

When: Friday, December 16 10:00 am - 6:00 pm Saturday, December 17 10:00 am - 6:00 pm Sunday, December 18 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

There is free parking in the rear of the hotel.

We hope you can attend!

I'd like to add to the list of shelters where Katrina animals are being housed - Animal Ark Shelter way up in Hastings, MN. Go to animalarkshelter.org to see Katrina animals who are being sheltered or fostered until March at which point they'll all go up for adoption. The black 'n white kitten I'm fostering ('Katya' name given by shelter) who was found at 24 N Walker Rd or St(?) New Orleans is NOT posted on Petfinder that I could find. So I don't know how her owners could ever find her. Her BFS # is 0925. Go to the website "shelter page/katrina pets" to see pictures of all the animals up in Hastings, Minnesota to see if your pet is up there.

One group, called "Katrina Homeless Animal Taxi", has taken 138 animals to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and is planning to adopt them out immediately. In fact, she says about 70 dogs already have new homes. I talked to one of the rescuers today, and she assured me that she had gotten them from a "kill shelter" and that they had all been there as owner turn-ins. There are 88 dogs, 50 cats, and a rabbit, hauled to the cold mountains of Wyoming. I asked if they had been listed on Petfinders, Dogdetectives, etc., and she said "No,not yet", but supposedly they are already adopting these dogs out. There are poodles, dachunds, basset hounds, Jack Russells, a Great Pyrenees, and a Weimaraner. If anyone is looking for one of these dogs, the Humane Society number in Driggs Idaho is 208 354 3499, and the adoption center in Jackson is 307 739 1881. I asked that they call Anita, at 302-668-8614, but I doubt strongly that they will do this. The article concerning the dogs is at http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:P8tBcJ7wVBMJ: www.jhnewsandguide.com/Feature.html +138+dogs+jackson+hole&hl=en I don't know how to cross post this, if anyone can help, and knows where it would do the most good. Thanks. Silvertooth

PETOWNERS of St. Bernard - Please visit this link to help find your pet: http://www.loststbernardpets.com/

The St. Bernard Animal Control has joined forces with the ASPCA and volunteers from many other animal organizations in order to rescue as many St. Bernard pets as possible and to reunite them with their families.

If you are currently in the New Orleans area and can not find your pet, we strongly recommend that you come by the St. Bernard Animal Control temporary shelter in Rebel Field behind the Chalmette High School to look for your lost pet there. If you are not in New Orleans and left a pet behind that was confined to your house or yard, we strongly recommend that, if possible, you come back to your house to search for your pet. Many pets have been found still alive, even when confined to the house for over a month!

In addition, if you have a lost or missing pet, we recomend you do the following things:

If you have lost a dog or puppy in St. Bernard Parish, please look at our pictures of lost dogs.

If you have lost a cat or kitten in St. Bernard Parish, please look at our pictures of lost cats.

If you have lost another type of animal such as a horse, chicken, goat etc then that animal will be included in the dog listings, so please look at our lost dogs and other animals.

If you do not see your pets on our website, then it is very important that you search the Petfinder website for your pet because that is where the LA SPCA, HSUS and other animal welfare agencies are posting the pets that they have found in St. Bernard Parish.

Keep looking at both our website and petfinder and don't give up!
