PETA kills animals? What’s up?

June 24, 2005 : 6:55 PM ET

On June 15th, two employees of the animal rights group PETA were arrested by police in North Carolina and each charged with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts each of illegal disposal of dead animals.

The Associated Press quoted police as saying that investigators had been staking out a shopping center garbage bin after discovering that dead animals had been dumped there every Wednesday for the past four weeks.

Local officials and veterinarians said they were told that PETA would find homes for the animals, not kill them.

The story has been making news all over the country. PETA kills homeless animals and lies about it?

In fact, reports of incidents like this have been circulating for years. And while PETA does not exactly want people to know about it, they rarely deny these reports when asked about them.

Indeed, Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, makes no bones about the fact that they are opposed to the No More Homeless Pets movement, believe that it is a pipe dream, and consider the only solution to be a “final solution.”

Here’s the A.P. story, and then, on following pages:

* An explanation by Ingrid Newkirk of why PETA kills animals, published in the Virginia Pilot * A statement from Best Friends on the subject, along with some notes on the arguments PETA uses to justify its behavior. * Some notes on what PETA says, and links to other commentators

PETA staff arrested for animal cruelty The report from the Associated Press, June 17, 2005

Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have been charged with animal cruelty after dumping dead dogs and cats in a shopping center garbage bin, police said Thursday.

Investigators staked out the bin after discovering that dead animals had been dumped there every Wednesday for the past four weeks, Ahoskie police said in a prepared statement.

Police found 18 dead animals in the trash bin and 13 more in a van registered to PETA. The animals were from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said. The two were picking up animals to be brought back to PETA headquarters for euthanization, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said Thursday.

Neither police nor PETA offered any theory on why the animals might have been dumped.

Local officials and veterinarians said they were told that PETA would find homes for the animals, not euthanize them. PETA has scheduled a news conference for Friday afternoon in Norfolk, Va., where the group is based, to discuss the charges.

Police charged Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, Va., each with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals. They were released on bond and an initial court date was set for Friday in Winton.

Hinkle has been suspended, but Cook continues to work PETA, Newkirk said. Hinkle has worked for more than two years as one of its community animal project employees in North Carolina, PETA spokeswoman Colleen O'Brien said.

Cook, who joined a couple of months ago, was being trained. Newkirk said she doubted Hinkle had ever been cruel to an animal and said if the animals were placed in the bin, "We will be appalled."

PETA euthanizes animals by lethal injection, which it considers more humane than gassing groups of animals, as poor counties are forced to do, O'Brien said.

"PETA has provided euthanasia services to various counties in (North Carolina) to prevent animals from being shot behind a shed or gassed in windowless metal boxes, both practices that were carried out until PETA volunteered to provide a painless death, free of charge," Newkirk said.

But veterinarian Patrick Proctor said that authorities found a female cat and her two "very adoptable" kittens among the dead animals. He said they were taken from Ahoskie Animal Hospital.

"These were just kittens we were trying to find homes for," he said. "PETA said they would do that, but these cats never made it out of the county."

PETA had taken 50 animals from Proctor's practice over the past two years, he said.

PETA also has taken animals from veterinarian James Brown in Northampton County.

"When they started taking them, they said they would try to find homes for them," Brown said, adding that no one checked on the animals afterward.

Barry Anderson, Bertie County's animal control officer, identified nearly all of the dumped dogs as ones that Cook and Hinkle picked up just a few hours earlier Wednesday, said Detective Sgt. Ed Pittman of the Bertie County Sheriff's Office.

Anderson also said that the PETA representatives "told him they were picking up the dogs to take them back to Norfolk where they would find them good homes," Pittman said.

"Appalled", "Sickened" "Let this be a lesson" "Saddened" Peta had something to do with animals dying in a zoo. What! This is not about Peta snatching dogs and cats from the loving arms of people who adopted them from the shelter. This is about Peta sparing these animals from a long and anguishing death in a gas chamber. I do believe they tried to place as many as they could before euthanizing them. Otherwise the animals would have been killed right away in their possesion and that did not happen. Please, people, this is not about chosing death over life. I have heard "rumors" about a Peta person going into a vet's office and taking kittens by promising them they would find them a home. I don't believe this could be true I mean why didn't they just keep getting ones from the shelter if all they want to do is keep killing animals. Why go to the vet to get some. The ugly accusions have gotten way out of hand and even bordering on rediculous such as the person who is convinced Peta has killed animals at a zoo. When the seals are being clubbed and skinned alive, Peta is there. When dogs and cats in China, Phillipines, Korea and elsewhere are being butchered for their meat and fur, Peta is there. When kittens are being operated on in labs and monkeys are kept in cages their entire lives without seeing a ray of sunshine, Peta has been there. When the fashion industry ignores the cries of animals who are electricuted, drowned and clubbed so people can wear fur coats, Peta was there also. You don't have to agree with everything the group does but you should know all the facts before attacking them. Has anyone seen an animal being put to death in a gas chamber? It is still being used in shelters, groups of dogs being gassed together in front of other dogs. I don't blame Peta for other people's lack of humanity.

whatever garnet... i know what the real truth is ..trust me on that note! PETA knew what was going on..that was their way of keeping thier stats down so they wouldnt loose donations..who would want to donate to a group who [uts more animals down than anyone..so of course they knew..they didnt want people to see their true numbers of how many are put down!

Thank you for telling me about PETA. As a PETA member I am shocked and apalled. I will write to drop my membership and register a complaint. The way to stop the pet overpopulation problem is through spay/neuter, not through killing adoptable animals who want to live. PETA has done some good things in promoting vegetarianism, but this negates all their work and shows them to be monsters. Life is precious. I TNR feral cats and when I trap I watch them for long periods of time. Even in the worst weather, for which they are ill-equipped being non-native, they butts heads with their friends, meow their thanks for the food, and some even play ice hockey with a chunk of ice. Every day is precious. I am pro all life, huan and animal. People these days are too ready to "solve" problems by killing. It is not a solution.

I tried to read every comment here before posting but qirckly lost my patience.

Best Friends needs to remove this story from its site, as well as the comments below. This serves NO PURPOSE other than to fracture the animal rights movement, which is already hurting badly. I am appalled that Best Friends would contribute to this--what are they trying to acomplish with this? To ge more more donations from people who are angry with PETA? To get more praise and warm fuzzies from their "fans"? There's one word for that: sleazy.

PETA is opposed to the no-kill philosophy, and makes no bones about it. I don't necessarily agree with that. However, I did a search of PETA's site, and they have no mention whatsoever of Best Friends. Amazingly, it appears that PETA is the one who has taken the high-road in this case.

I live in North Carolina nearby the area where PETA dumped the animals. I was sickened by it and couldn't even listen to the local news about the story anymore (after hearing twice, it just angered me to hear it again). I never have liked PETA. To me, they symbolize something that is not kind or compassionate at all. Thank you for putting that article here.

Best Friends is such a wonderful, wondeful place, and I have so much enjoyed my recent visits here -- to read about Best Friends, your efforts with Katrina, your accomplishments, your staff, the animals, the santuary, etc. "Hope Rising", which I came across earlier today, is an excellent tribute! HUGE thank you to Best Friends for their love and devotion to all creatures great and small.

I've always felt that PETA had a hidden agenda. It has been my experience that overly-radical groups have a tendency to cross Ethical and Honesty boundaries to make a point. PETA is definitely no exception.

Here in Chicago, we've had a sudden problem with animals dying at Lincoln Park Zoo. PETA started a tirade about it, and over a series of weeks, many other animals died. I believe that PETA somehow had a hand in killing those animals. The Zoo was doing alright until PETA focussed attention to it. How could a Zoo with a fairly good success record suddenly go downhill so fast? If PETA doesn't mind killing animals to prove a point, then they have no qualms in destroying a zoo's reputation. Events after PETA got involved were too shady and questionable to blame the zoo. Outside sources had to be responsible for those deaths.
