To all, here is another update from my daughter down in Gonzales - I think at Lamar (to ensure I don't misrepresent she is not a BFO volunteer, she volunteers with another organization out of Washington), They still need help. If anyone wants her contact info, please post back. . hey everyone, so it was our last day in gonzales today and it was the hardest day we have all had. many animals were put down over the last few days due to a number of reasons, biting, parvo, and illness. i have to care for 6 parvo positive puppies yesterday knowing that when i came back today they might not be there. today i was put in charge of the cat barn the cat barn really needed some guidance. it was soo hot today we had to rush about 50 cats to an outside triage unit to do sub Q fluids in hopes that they wont dehydrate. its so sad seeing little kitten lifeless because they are dehydrated. the dogs are in a better situation only because they actually get to get out of their cages and can be hosed down, however they also go a day or longer without being let out, most sleeping and eating right next to where they have going to the bathroom. people at gonzales really need a break, we had a meeting yesterday people screaming and crying about Pres. Bush and what is going to happen to all of the animals. The louisiana governor has placed a hold on all animals until october 1st. this means NO ANIMALS CAN BE FOSTERED UNLESS YOU ARE A REGISTERED RESCUE until oct 1st. of course, if animals have been transported to your local humans society then they can. From oct 1-15th they can be fostered and on the 16th they can be adopted. The governor really needs to release them sooner, i am not sure how many will be able to make it through. When we left today they were getting about 700 more in tonight and the Public Health Department was threatening another shut down unless things got cleaned up a bit more. I found a terrier mom that you would LOVE!! I wrote down her info as she will be on petfinder in the next few weeks for fostering, she was sooo sweet. Yesterday was a record number at the shelter for people finding their pets and i saw one man find his horse today. If we can organize it, another ddb team needs to come down in the next few weeks. they really need organized people and people who are going to be able to handle the stress. Tomorrow we are going back to LSU in the morning before our flight to make records of the dogs we would like sent to washington for fosters and to say goodbye to some we got very attached to the first few days. Oh, to everyone concerned about dogs being shot. The aspca and HSUS have NOT ordered the shootings, neither has the governor nor the state health department. if that sherriff is doing so, it is on his own accord and he needs to be reprimanded!!! One of our vets went into the city yesterday and did triage and dropped on food, she said the second you get out of your car packs of dogs and cats come running up hoping for some food and rescue. She also had many more horrifying stories that i dont want to get in to, they really need help down here you guys!!!
If you can come to gonzales, get yourself organized and when i return i will give you contact info. Make plans to stay at least a week if you can.

Your post was so upsetting. I live in NYC but am from AL & know what type of ignorance you must be facing....rural areas can be scary in their views of animals...not all of them of course, but this is so awful. I am pretty familiar with the different animal organizations and wondered if you had contacted peta.org? They may let you down, but I doubt it. This the type of thing that outrages them. I know they are a little bit political, but unfortunately until animals are granted more rights and more value in our government, they will continue to have no protection and no penalties for harming them. I doubt your local politicians would care & don't know if you tried hsus.org or aspca.org. In my experience peta loves to uncover & expose such horrible abuses as this & prosecute the offenders. give it a try & let me know if there is a way i can help. You & your family are angels. It's hard not to get discouraged when you are alone in your beliefs but keep trying....sometimes even your outrage can make people examine things in a new light....why does someone care so much about dogs? at least it gets them thinking that not all people agree with their barbaric behavior. I would also see if you can get any help from the local news in the nearest city...all you need is ONE reporter that is an animal lover. Good luck, amy
PEOPLE DOWN IN GULFPORT NEED TO SET UP OTHER STAGE AREAS.NOT HARD........SOMEONE HAS TO LEAD THE STAGE AND HELP RELIEVE THE PRESSURES.....NEED PEOPLE TO THINK ON THEIR OWN AND NOT DEPEND ON OTHERS. NEW STAGE AREAS NEEDED IN MS AROUND THE SURROUNDING COASTAL AREAS.
LINDA EARNHART HAS JUST SET UP A NEW STAGE SITE THAT NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS....I WILL RELAY MORE INFO AS IT COMES TO ME. THIS SITUATION REQUIRES PEOPLE TO THINK ON THEIR FEET AND ORGANIZE AS THEY GO.....
PLAQS PARISH CAPTAIN OF POLICE RELAYED THEIR ARE MANY ANIMALS ROAMING AND NO REAL RESCUE EFFORTS.. SEEMING THAT HE WOULD BE NON-RESITIVE TO EFFORTS.
CANT JUST GO IN THE AREA AND EXPECT TO FIND ANIMALS AT EVERY MINUTE. THESE ANIMALS ARE TRAMATIZED BY THE INITIAL DISASTER WITH EMERGENCY CALAMITY SURROUNDING THEM.... FOR HARD TO FIND DIFFICULT ANIMALS ....GET IN SET UP STAGE..TRY TO CALM THE AREA...PLACE FOOD WATER AROUND THE STAGE AREAS KEEP DRAWING THEM CLOSER. THROUGH A FEW TRAPS DOWN...KEEP IT CALM
MANY PEOPLE ARE OFFERING SUPPLIES AND OTHER STAGE SITES ARE NEEDED. NEED TO FORM TRANSFER SSITES FARTHER FROM THE REAL DISASTER AREAS SO ANIMALS FROM THE TRASHED PLACES CAN BE RESCUED........
BOTTOM LINE....NEED MORE STAGE SITES..........ONE IN THE COMPLETELY DEVASTATED AREAS WHERE ANIMALS STILL ROAM....OTHERS FARTHER NORTH ETC WHERE RECUED ANIMALS CAN BE PLACED
